Questions about your first Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

I have been in the Medical Aesthetics world since 2005 and specializing in Laser Hair Removal since 2008. It is all I do all day everyday. I've perfected the art one would say. When a new patient comes to me after having a bad experience at another laser spa it is typically due to lack of knowledge of both client and tech. Part of what makes Austin Laser Solutions stand out above the rest

is providing my guests with quality service and education about Laser Hair Removal. I have put together a list of FAQ in hopes for a better understanding of risks and benefits when starting laser hair removal.

What do I wear?

Wear clothing that will leave the treated area exposed or is loose fitting.

Is there paperwork I need to fill out?

Yes, I have a confidential medical evaluation online that you should fill out before you arrive. This will be the first step in the process of determining your candidacy for laser treatments. Click Here to get the paperwork started

Can I do a consultation and treatment same day?

Yes, most patients will have time to receive treatment the same day as their consultation if they are ready and are deemed to be good candidates for laser hair removal. We suggest shaving prior to your consultation and not having a sunburn if you expect to get started the same day as your consultation visit.

How to prepare for laser hair removal?

Please refer to pre & post care instructions in the patient portal.

Does it hurt?

The level of discomfort depends on the treated area, texture of the hair, and pigment of the skin. Keep in mind everyone has a different pain tolerance.

However, some people describe it as the snapping of a hot

rubber band. The GentleMax laser used at Austin Laser Solutions has

a unique patented cooling system that provides comfort as well as efficacy for ALL skin types. After each session, the hairs become thinner and lighter causing them to become weak which makes it less painful. To help with

discomfort during the procedure I would recommend taking a ibuprofen before hand.

What is the recovery time?

Virtually there is no downtime. However, you will most likely experience erythema (redness) and perifollicular edema (bumps) which are a short term, mild side effect that resolves almost immediately but could last a matter of hours sometimes days following the treatment. I suggest no heat for the rest of the day such as warm baths and exercise. If you have any discomfort, ibuprofen, aloe or ice would put that to rest.

How long does the treatment take?

The treatment time can vary considerably depending on the size of the area treated. A small area such as the upper lip may take only 8 seconds, while a larger area like the back or lower legs may take up to 30 minutes.

How many sessions are needed?

Laser hair removal will only work on hair actively growing. So we recommend that it will take a minimum 6 treatments to effectively treat an area with our laser. We will get about 80% of the actively growing hairs. The average person takes anywhere between 6-10 consecutive treatments with recommended touch ups 2-3 times a year to maintain your reduction.

How far apart should laser hair removal treatments be?

The growth phase can differ from patient to patient and also the areas of body to be treated. Talking about face, if the laser is done on upper lip, chin or any area on the face it should be spaced out 2-3 weeks, while for the body, the approximate wait time is 5-6 weeks.

How permanent is laser hair removal?

While laser hair removal doesn't get rid of hair forever (only electrolysis is FDA-approved for permanent hair removal), it does drastically reduce hair growth

—to the point that you can stop shaving altogether.

How many days after my treatment does the hair fall out?

Immediately after laser, all the hair is not gone from the treated area. It takes 2-3 weeks for the dead hair to push out of the follicle. This is not new hair growth, but dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle. You should moisturize area and loofa sponge or rub vigorously with a washcloth to keep follicles open, to prevent ingrown hairs.

What do I do to area in between treatments?

You can Shave area between treatments, no plucking or waxing. When you pluck hair you leave partial root in skin. This root is injured and the body’s natural response is to make it bigger, stronger and thicker when it grows back.

When should I begin treatment?

Laser hair removal works best when there is a contrast between skin and hair, so untanned skin works best. However, if you're like me and live in Texas where it's sunny 10 months out of the year and your weekend

hobbies include wake surfing on Lake Austin, it's virtually impossible to avoid the sun. With that being said, having a session and then exposing the treated area to the sun without SPF will cause extreme sun damage like hypo (white spots) and hyper-pigmentation (brown spots). Your skin is extremely sensitive and vulnerable to the sun after a treatment. So take caution and wear your sunscreen, it will help you in more ways then one.

Side Note: Be honest with your technician if you’ve been out in the sun prior to your appointment. We are here to execute your treatments without compromising the integrity of your skin, all while delivering results.

Does Laser Hair Removal really work?

Yes! Laser hair removal really works when the right laser is used on the right skin and hair type. Keep in mind the laser is attracted to pigment, such as brown and black hair. Extremely light, gray or blonde hairs are almost impossible to get rid of. This brings up a very important topic. Laser Hair Removal vs. Laser Hair Reduction. There is a big difference between claiming permanent hair reduction and permanent hair removal. Permanent hair removal implies that there will be no regrowth, whereas with permanent hair reduction you may

see some regrowth of fine, thin hairs. Laser hair removal is considered more permanent hair reduction than permanent hair removal. You can expect about

80% hair reduction once you complete a series of treatments (usually 6-10

consecutively with touch ups 2-3 times a year as needed). Trust me, having to shave a little "peach fuzz" 2-3 times a year sure beats the razor burn and

ingrown hairs of shaving every day.
